Amsterdam is famous for its canals. Which makes it possible for you to explore Amsterdam by boat. Do you want a relaxed city trip through the canals? Or have some excercise in the meanwhile by using a waterbicycle? Get off your bike, park your car and become passenger, or captain, start exploring the waterways of Amsterdam, to see the city from a different perspective.
Not just Amsterdam but Holland in general is known for its canals. Originally maybe dug out for defending the city, or as a serious means of transportation, now they are mostly decorative, and provide for a form of recreation.

In the 19th century plans were made to get rid of all the canals, because in those days they were mostly a source of diseases and a bad stench. These destructive plans were put through in the north of the Jordaan, as well as in places like the Damrak, Rokin, Waterlooplein, etc...
Luckily most of the canals still exist today, and you can get in a boat and see the city, to view its characteristic canal-houses from a low perspective.
