The 9 streets (negen straatjes) area in Amsterdam is a very special neighborhood for shopping. Here you won't find any large chain stores, so don't expect a shopping mall. In this area you will find a diverse selection of small shops, from local bakeries to haute-couture. Besides that there are also several bars and restaurants.
Although the existence of this area as seperate neighborhood is more a marketing strategy than a historic fact, the streets have a lot in common with eachother, and represent nearly a brand defined as a shopping district being characterized by its diverse, high quality, specialized and small scale nature.

These streets are situated in the canals district. The streets run through the canal belt. Usually the streets are a bit narrow, but wide enough to support a one-lane road (mostly used by bicycles), with narrow sidewalks on each side.
