About one hour by car or train from Amsterdam, you can visit a very long beach, which stretches along the Dutch coastline. On this coastline there are a few old fishing-villages, one of which is Zandvoort. Today Zandvoort is a tourist attraction for beach-loving travelers. Besides the beach itself, Zandvoort also offers a casino, a professional racing circuit, many beachclubs and of course the dunes that protect Holland against the Northsea.
Zandvoort offers high-quality beaches, with great smooth sand. In summer this is really a great place to be! Its only downside could be the crowdedness, as many people from the Amsterdam region may get the same idea to visit Zandvoort when the city is too warm. On such days the roads to Zandvoort are usually congested and the trains can be really full with people.

If you want to escape the crowdedness of the beaches, right behind them you can find the dunes. The dunes are basically a large natural park, with unique nature. Dunes are actually just hills, but these hills are formed by the sea and wind, the grass that grows there keep the dunes strong. Without the grass all the sand would just be blown away. It is important that the dunes remain strong, because they protect Holland against the sea. Therefore many areas are not accessible for the public. Other places in the dunes aren't accessible because they form the water-source for Amsterdam. These sources provide very clean water, making the waterquality in Amsterdam very good. Of course there are still many areas in the dunes that you can walk, or cycle through.

If you are more into action and especially if you are a racing freak, Zandvoort also has a racing circuit. Regularly races are being done here, but there are also days that you can drive there with your own car. This circuit used to be an F1 track, but the Formula 1 hasn't used the track for quite some time now.

In the evening and night Zandvoort has a wide selection of places to go out. The little town itself for example, but if you walk over the beach towards the north, you will reach the beach resort called Bloemendaal, which has a lot of beachclubs where you can party all night long.
